Dental implants or artificial roots

Dental implants replace missing teeth. Schedule a free implant consultation with an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Free consultation comes with no obligations.

Today, we live longer than any generation before us. However, our teeth aren’t designed to last until our centenary. Over time, dental treatments like fillings and root canals can weaken teeth significantly. Dental implants offer a lifelong solution to replace missing teeth when damaged teeth need extraction.

Book a free implant consultation for valuable insights into considering and planning dental implants. The consultation does not commit you to anything.

Dental implants

Dental implants are screw-shaped artificial roots surgically placed into the jawbone. Once the implant is secured, a crown is attached on top, serving as the visible part of the new tooth. Implants permanently replace missing teeth and function like natural ones.

Typically made from titanium, the same material used in many other body prosthetics, dental implants enable osseointegration, where bone grows and attaches to the titanium surface.

An ideal implant candidate is a non-smoker who maintains good oral health with regular check-ups, and shows no signs of gum disease. Ideally, there’s sufficient remaining bone after tooth extraction for implant placement.

High-quality dental implants

Dental implants, also known as artificial roots, are made from titanium, a material used in many body prostheses. Titanium is unique because it adapts and integrates with the jawbone within a few months.

At Helmiäinen, we exclusively use clinically tested Straumann and Nobel Biocare implants, known for their quality and durability.

A dental implant consists of the fixture (implant), the abutment, and the crown. The implant is embedded into the jawbone, the abutment is attached after integration, and the crown is the visible part placed on top of the abutment, resembling a natural tooth.

Before implant treatment

Implant treatment is a process that involves several dental visits. The consideration and planning start with a consultation appointment. At Helmiäinen, implant consultations are free and do not obligate the client.

Before starting the actual treatment, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon conducts a clinical examination of the mouth. In addition to the clinical examination, a radiographic examination is required to begin implant treatment. These examinations form the basis for individually planned implant treatment.

Implant treatment can proceed when the mouth is healthy and oral hygiene is maintained. If there is any inflammation or other conditions requiring treatment in the mouth, these will be addressed before implant placement.

Placement of the implant

The implant, or artificial root, is surgically placed into the jawbone under local anesthesia. The surgeon drills a cavity into the jawbone where the screw is inserted.

Precise positioning is achieved at Helmiäinen using an implant navigator. Benefits of navigator assistance include:

  • Reduced need for bone grafts
  • Increased longevity of prosthetics
  • Enhanced patient safety
  • Decreased complications

Healing phase

Osseointegration refers to the immediate connection between the implant and the bone. Successful implantation largely depends on bone integration.

Drilling into the bone creates trauma in the area, initiating wound healing mechanisms. During the healing process, cells become activated to form bone, soft tissues, and blood vessels. Bone grows tightly around the porous surface of the implant, ensuring a secure attachment.

The implant is allowed to osseointegrate over a period of several months.

Prosthetic structure

Once the tissue has healed, it’s time to attach the prosthetic structure to the dental implant. The prosthetic structure could be a crown, a dental bridge, or a denture.

To create the prosthetic structure, necessary impressions are taken. These impressions are used to fabricate items like dental crowns or bridges.

The prosthetic phase typically involves several visits to the oral and maxillofacial surgeon’s office.

Self-care

A dental implant must be cared for as meticulously as natural teeth, and implants should also be examined regularly, for example, every six months to a year.

During check-up appointments, the mouth and dental implant are thoroughly cleaned.

Neglecting self-care can lead to inflammation and in the worst case, the implant detaching from the jawbone.

Digital technology

In the summer of 2020, Helmiäinen Dental Clinic advanced its implant procedures with new equipment. The introduction of implant navigators allows for precise positioning of dental implants down to the millimeter.

While the implantation process remains unchanged, the navigator enhances procedures in the following ways:

  • Reduces the need for bone grafts
  • Improves longevity of prosthetics
  • Enhances patient safety and reduces complications by providing real-time tissue assessment throughout the procedure

With the navigator, we can target the procedure precisely to the correct location, says dentist Ville Männistö.

Is it for me?

An ideal dental implant candidate:

  • Maintains excellent oral hygiene
  • Is generally healthy, with any underlying conditions like diabetes well-managed
  • Does not have gum disease
  • Does not smoke
  • Is no longer in their growth phase

Adequate bone quantity in the implantation area is crucial. Bone volume can be increased using synthetic bone or by transferring bone from another site in the patient’s body. In some cases, both synthetic bone and bone grafts may be necessary.

Osseointegration

A dental implant is a screw-shaped artificial root surgically placed into the jawbone. The threads on the implant can support one or even two new dental crowns.

Dental implants are typically made from titanium, also used in other body prosthetics like hip or knee replacements. Titanium’s unique property is its ability to integrate and bond with the jawbone over a few months (osseointegration).

At Helmiäinen Dental Clinic, we exclusively use clinically proven Straumann and Nobel Biocare implants known for their quality and durability.

Plenty of solutions

Dental implants offer versatile solutions. One missing tooth is replaced with one implant and one crown. Two missing teeth can sometimes be restored with one implant supporting two crowns. Three missing teeth may be replaced with two implants and a bridge of three teeth attached to them.

Several strategically placed implants can address extensive tooth loss. For those who have lost all their teeth, options include a full-arch bridge or a removable overdenture supported by a few implants.
